7/10. Value for Money - 7/10. 7.9/10. Pros: Comfortable ride paired with impressive dynamics, well-designed and well-trimmed interior that oozes classic BMW luxury feel, high-res infotainment screen is massive and perfectly placed, intuitive semi-autonomous driving tech works well.
The F11 had the longest wheelbase in its class at 2968mm, creating a greater feeling of interior space and BMW said this translated into an extra 13mm of knee room for rear passengers compared to the previous 5 Series. When it was announced in early 2010 two diesel-engined models were listed as being available to order, the 520d and the 530d.
For closer inspection reveals these two are as different as they are similar. The Mercedes-Benz E250 CDI heads off into comfy family tourer territory, while BMW's M Sport optioned 520d heads more into the realms of driver satisfaction. Launched locally in 2010, the E250 CDI lopped about $30K off the entry price to the E wagon.
That balance might change in a few years time, but today, in 2018, diesel definitely makes most sense for you. The 520d is an excellent car. As is the 530e, I might add, but the diesel still has the edge for long-distance driving, as you need to plug the 530e in regularly to get the best economy from it. The BMW 530d was powered by a 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel making 265bhp and 620Nm of torque. With the discontinuation, however, the only diesel variant offered with the 5 Series is the 520d which uses a 2.0-litre four-cylinder motor producing 190bhp and 400Nm of torque.
BMW’s award-winning 5 Series range has now been expanded with the introduction of the Business Edition model portfolio. Offered on 520d, 525d and 530d Saloon and Touring variants, and in SE and M Sport trims, the Business Edition specification represents a significant customer saving on a range of equipment normally offered as an option.
