You see Joel in TLOU1 has a pretty complete character arc that fully encompasses the 20 years between Sarah's death and meeting Ellie. He was a dad, he brutally lost his way, he becomes a dad again. Joel needs to be a static character for those 20 years in order for TLOU1's character arc to be meaningful. To quickly recap: Joel and Ellie finally reach the Firefly hospital located in Salt Lake City. The Fireflies throw a stun grenade at the duo on sight, with Joel waking up to hear that Ellie is Image via HBO. In Episode 8, Ellie is still trying to help Joel recover on his feet after they got attacked at the University of Eastern Colorado. Since they need food, Ellie takes Joel’s rifle The Prologue. The Last of Us' prologue introduces us to Joel, who lives in Austin, Texas with his daughter Sarah. Joel comes home late, and Sarah is waiting for him to give him his birthday gift. The game contradicted its tone right there. Sarah couldn't survive a shot but Joel was able to survive that. The "Joel gets stabbed" scenario is WAY better.
